AFTER DARK, CINEMA AS A HOMOEROTIC PRETEXT

After Dark was an information magazine about theater, cinema, ballet with information about famous actors, dancers and singers. Behind it was hidden a magazine aimed especially at a homosexual audience.

The persecution of homosexuality led to the appearance of magazines that used an appearance muscle building workout plan for beginners to send their true intention. Bodybuilding was a very popular example in the USA, in Spain we found PARTY magazine with stars on the cover and scantily clad boys inside.

After Dark is an example of this. His journey was irregular, he was born in 1968 and ended in 1983. Bette Midler (January 1973), Robert Redford (December 1973), Barbra Streisand (April 1975), Lauren Hutton (December 1976), Mae appeared on their covers. West (May 1977), Peter Allen (February 1978), Dolly Parton (April 1978), Jon Voight (April 1979), Christopher Reeve (October 1980), Lily Tomlin (February 1981), and Diana Ross ( May 1981). The 1975 February issue includes a photographic portfolio of gay porn star Peter Berlin.

The magazine started talking about men's fashion or travel. Little by little, information about restaurants, accommodations, discotheques, bathhouses, guides, books, pornographic films all of homosexual interest appeared. At its peak, the magazine had more than 300,000 readers, "consisting almost exclusively of gay men."

In 1979 a revolutionary advertisement for its time appeared: "No man should be without a man!" ("No Man Should Be Without A Man!") The ad continued as follows: "If you would like to meet, sincere hot gay men (and women) who are interesting in forming relationships ... then the time is right"

After Dark was not described as a "gay magazine", despite topics of interest to the gay community. Magazine editors recognized the magazine's appeal to the gay community, noting that the magazine "had managed to pioneer the gay community seven to eight years earlier than any other gay magazine on the market."

An article in the February 1977 issue of "Musclebound for Glory" contained photos of bodybuilders. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the cover model for that theme and several photographs of him were used as illustrations in the article. In two photographs, he appears totally naked.
